There’s an App for That!

I’m sure you’ve heard that phrase over and over again. And it’s true...there is an app for just about anything you want to do on your smartphone or tablet. Even in our industry, where we are very hands-on, we still find handy apps that help make our day easier. Here are a few you might want to try out if you’re in the home or interior design industry, or if you’re just trying to spruce things up for your own home.

Our Favorite Apps for Designers

Apps for Designers: HouzzHouzz - It’s SO many things and so wonderful! First, it’s a great place for inspiration. You can make "ideabooks" which are like virtual scrapbooks of inspiring rooms or products. Second, you can find a professional to work with you on your house – from architects to designers to decorative painters like ourselves. And third, if you are in the home industry it’s a great place to showcase your work and get the word out about who you work with and what you do. The best part is, you can access it all from the phone in your pocket!

Apps for Designers: PaperPaper – Paper is an incredibly fun app, and it's really useful. It’s basically a virtual sketch book. I love all the options of colors and media that I can use to sketch or paint, using my finger or a stylus. You can create beautiful watercolor works of art, or sketch the layout and dimensions of a room. It works great for designers because your sketches can then be easily shared via the web. And if you do choose to make something absolutely wonderful they even have an option to print your book! How fabulous would it be to present a client with a little book featuring all of your renderings at the end of the project, as a memento of all that you accomplished together. Whether you use this app for professional or personal tasks, you’ll thoroughly enjoy using it!

Apps for Designers: Compass / LevelCompass – This is one is an app that probably came default on your phone, especially if you have an iPhone. Now, most people would only use this tool if they were lost in the jungle, but it has a great hidden little feature that can help us at home. If you swipe your screen to the left you’ll see that there is a level. It’s a great tool to hang photos or art on the wall; you can use it just like a traditional leveling tool... when the screen turns green, it is level. The best part is that it’s free on iOS devices!

We hope you like our 3 favorite apps as much as we do! Do you have a great app that helps aid in design or art? Leave us a comment and tell us about it!
