It’s Small Biz Saturday Nov.29

Small Business – In Good Company!

I saw a promotion for "Small Biz Saturday" the other day on television and it got me thinking about how many people I know who own their own businesses. The funny thing is business owners tend to hang out with other business owners. We're like a cult! We talk with each other all the time about our businesses, our employees, our clients, our highs and lows. It’s not that misery loves company, because we all seem pretty glad to be doing what we are doing. I think no one else cares about business like a small business owner. We tend to eat, sleep, and breathe it! Of course, I'm a little biased. I've added some of my favorite local design trade businesses'll find great people, terrific products and a personal touch that makes all the difference in the world!

Most of us didn’t start out with the intention of starting and running our own businesses. There are as many reasons as there are businesses. For me, it was trying to get paid for a job that interested me and excited me enough to show up every day. I liked decorative painting and did it practically free for awhile, until the light bulb went on and I realized I might be able to support myself doing something I loved. Sometimes when a talent comes naturally to us, we don’t always give it value. For some it was doing the same job that they did for someone else with the idea of running the business better. For others it was getting the money they felt they deserved for the work they were doing. However we got there, somewhere along the way we also got employees, bookkeepers, an office manager, assistants, social media people, etc.

To most small business owners (those with 50 employees or less, which doesn’t sound too small to me!) we are just trying to grow our business, give great service to our clients, make a better product, and keep the wheel moving forward! For those employees that work with us, we are their livelihood, their means of making a house payment, a way to put groceries on the table, and better their families' situation. As fast as they earn it, the faster it goes to the daycare worker, grocery store, and the shops in the mall. Most importantly it touches our immediate community and adds to the health of our economy and country. Pretty amazing when you realize that it’s all because we wanted to find a better way, right?

I am most familiar with business owners who work in the design trade or with anything to do with houses. Most Interior Designers are small business owners, as are the drapery workrooms, upholsters, decorative painters, the mirror saleswoman, the plumbing supply showroom, tile suppliers, and tons more. Please allow me to mention a few great small business owners in our area! If you have an opportunity, see what great things these people can do for you.

Thank you for supporting small business!
